Reproductive Freedom

The decision to have an abortion is a deeply personal one – something the government has absolutely no business in. I trust women to do what’s right for themselves, their bodies, and their families. And we need to trust medical professionals to provide the care their patients seek.

As a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus(link is external), I was proud to cosponsor the Women's Health Protection Act(link is external). This bill would establish the federal statutory right for health care providers to offer abortion care, as well as the federal statutory right for patients to receive it, free from unnecessary state bans and restrictions. While abortion remains safe and legal in Oregon, states across the nation have made it illegal, even in the case of rape or incest. That is traumatizing and unacceptable – and Congress must intervene.

Additionally, around the country, we’ve seen certain crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) falsely advertise themselves as comprehensive reproductive health care providers, in an attempt to discourage clients from having abortions by providing misinformation about abortion and contraception. In an effort to address this disturbing trend, I joined the SAD Act(link is external), a bill aiming to direct the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to prohibit unfair or deceptive advertising related to the provision of abortion services and authorize the FTC to enforce these rules and collect penalties from organizations in violation.

Lastly, in the wake of the catastrophic Dobbs decision, abortion providers across Oregon have seen a massive surge in patients who travel to our state for reproductive care. We have opened our doors and our arms to them – and will continue to do so until the protections once upheld by Roe are restored at the federal level. That’s why I’m a cosponsor of the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act(link is external), which would prohibit lawmakers from criminalizing those who seek access to legal abortion outside their state. We all have a constitutional right to travel within the US and I won’t stand by as it’s trampled on by anti-choice politicians.
