Civil Rights

American history is punctuated by moments when our better angels prevailed – but those moments seldom came easily. From the battle to end segregation to the fight for marriage equality, we’ve made tremendous progress in the last several decades. Yet more remains to be done to ensure that every American can live freely without fear of discrimination, prejudice, or violence.
As a member of leadership for the Democratic Women’s Caucus, I’m working to expand gender equality across the United States. From the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would close the unfair gender pay gap, to the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would restore federal protections for abortion, I’m supportive of policies that lift up women in Oregon and across America.
I’m also proud to be a leader in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Oregon’s Sixth District is home to a thriving Latino community and, as a member of caucus leadership, I’m championing my community’s needs in Washington DC. As a Latina, I also know the importance of solidarity between people of all races, and I value collaborating with my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus to address the myriad challenges facing communities of color in America.
In addition to my caucus leadership roles, I’m a member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, which advocates for the fair treatment of LGBTQ2SIA+ individuals in America. In this caucus, I work with colleagues to ensure LGBTQ2SIA+ children and families have the support, resources, and legal protections they need to thrive.
