Congresswoman Salinas on Mifepristone Rulings
Tigard, OR – Today, Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (D-Tigard) issued the following statement after a federal appeals court set significant restrictions on mifepristone:
“Last Friday, a Trump-appointed judge in Texas issued a ruling that would suspend the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, a safe abortion and miscarriage-management medication that’s been on the market for more than two decades. This unscientific, partisan decision is the latest move in the ongoing attack on reproductive freedom across the United States. Abortion — including medication abortion, like mifepristone — is still safe and legal in Oregon. But, like so many Oregonians, I’m deeply troubled by these attacks — and I refuse to sit idly by as they jeopardize the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans.
“Earlier this week, I signed onto an amicus brief with more than 200 of my House and Senate colleagues asking for an appeals court to stay the Texas court’s ruling to suspend the FDA’s approval of mifepristone. Last night, an appeals court ruled to allow mifepristone to remain on the market. However, in that same decision, the court imposed severe restrictions on this drug, such as blocking its delivery through the mail and banning its use after seven weeks — before many women even know they’re pregnant.
“This ruling is incredibly disappointing — but it’s not the end of this fight. Too much is at stake for us to sit on the sidelines as reproductive freedom continues to come under assault in this country. We must ensure mifepristone remains available to all who need it and continue to fight to restore the right to choose in all fifty states.”
