Housing and Homelessness

Oregon is facing an unprecedented homelessness crisis and a severe housing shortage. It’s evident everywhere you go. Oregon is 140,000 homes short of what we need today, and we need to build more than 440,000 new homes over the next 20 years to keep up with demand. Meanwhile, over 14,000 Oregonians are currently experiencing homelessness.

Congress must do more to help folks get back on their feet. We need to increase the housing supply, particularly affordable housing. We also need to invest in wraparound supports for the homeless to help them successfully get into permanent affordable housing and provide the tools to find gainful employment.

I have supported the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act and the Workforce Housing Tax Credit Act to help fund new housing construction. I have been a strong and consistent advocate for funding programs like NeighborWorks, which help drive housing development in our communities. I am also a member of the Yes In My Back Yard Caucus, which advocates for solutions that make it easier for developers and communities to work together to meet local housing needs.

This isn’t a problem we can solve with half measures. We need to make robust investments in housing, as well as addiction treatment centers and mental health services. There is no silver bullet or one-size-fits-all solution. It’s going to take a multi-faceted, whole of government approach with federal, state, and local authorities working together to end this crisis.
