Salinas Votes for Government Funding Package, Advances $14 Million for Community Projects in Oregon’s Sixth District

March 6, 2024

Washington, DC Today, U.S. Representative Andrea Salinas (OR-06) announced that she successfully advanced $14,009,279 in Community Project Funding for Oregon’s Sixth District. This funding, included in the first of the Fiscal Year 2024 government appropriations packages passed by the House of Representatives, was requested by Rep. Salinas for critical public safety, housing, infrastructure, and rural development initiatives in her district. The legislation is expected to be signed into law by President Biden later this week.

“I am incredibly pleased to vote for the first government funding package today and advance over $14 million for important community projects in Oregon’s Sixth District,” said Rep. Salinas. “From making needed improvements to our roads and water infrastructure, to expanding access to rural broadband and public transportation, these projects will tangibly improve the lives of everyone in our communities.”

Rep. Salinas continued: “I’m also glad that my Democratic colleagues and I were successful in removing many of House Republicans’ harmful cuts and extreme policy riders from this legislation. Instead, these government funding bills will help improve public safety, lower costs for families, and boost our economy. I was proud to fight for these investments, and I look forward to seeing them put to good use in our district very soon.”

Rep. Salinas championed funding for 15 projects that will directly benefit residents of Oregon’s Sixth District. These include:

  • $500,000 to design and construct the Chestnut Street bridge in Independence and allow for additional road construction and housing development.
  • $880,000 to replace a drinking water line in Independence, improving access to clean drinking water for residents.
  • $500,000 to construct the Dayton Civic Center, a combined City Hall, Library, and Meeting Space that will improve Dayton’s ability to provide services to the community.
  • $500,000 to build a community center in Grand Ronde that will provide a gathering place, community services, and improved health care for members of the Grand Ronde Tribe.
  • $1,577,079 to construct a highway safety median along the McKay/Yergen/Ehlen Road Safety Corridor in Marion County, a dangerous area that has seen many fatal crashes.
  • $1,000,000 to construct two enhanced crossings along Hall Boulevard in Tigard that will help reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities.
  • $3,589,200 to design a new roundabout at the intersection of OR-99W and NE McDougall Rd/OR18 in Yamhill County, a high-speed, unsignalized intersection with a significant history of fatal crashes.
  • $850,000 to address capacity/security concerns and expand the terminal at the Salem Municipal Airport, including in common areas like baggage claim, passenger queueing areas, and waiting areas.
  • $500,000 to replace a pipe in downtown Carlton, allowing the city to reduce wastewater and improve public health and safety.
  • $1,000,000 to expand broadband internet in Sherwood, improving economic development, health care, and education access in the area.
  • $500,000 to construct a new transit center in south Salem, improving mobility and expanding access to public transportation for residents.
  • $850,000 to construct and repair a downtown corridor in McMinnville that intersects with Oregon Highway 99W at two significant intersections.
  • $500,000 to make needed repairs and HVAC upgrades to the Tigard Emergency Heating and Cooling Center, which acts as an emergency shelter and provides services for unhoused people during extreme weather.
  • $300,000 to pay for a full-time Homeless Community Service Officer in Tigard who will be tasked with monitoring encampments, connecting unhoused individuals with resources, and other important duties.
  • $963,000 to make HVAC modernizations and upgrades to congregate care facilities in Washington County, which are vital for ongoing justice and rehabilitation services.

Additionally, the FY 2024 government funding package will lower inflation and create good-paying jobs for Oregonians while providing more resources for communities to address pressing issues like homelessness, addiction, climate change, and more. The legislation:

  • Supports our veterans through targeted investments that increase funding for mental health services and suicide prevention.
  • Significantly increases funding for wildfire management and prevention and extends a pay cap waiver to ensure wildland firefighters continue getting paid what they deserve.
  • Fully funds the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to ensure millions of children and families can receive vital food assistance.
  • Creates and sustains tens of thousands of good-paying American jobs by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure with investments in airports, highways, transit, passenger rail, port, and affordable housing systems.
  • Significantly increases funding for homelessness prevention and mitigation assistance grants to provide resources to combat the growing homelessness crisis.
