Salinas Delivers Over $1.3 Million to City of Independence
Salem, OR –On Tuesday, April 23, U.S. Representative Andrea Salinas (OR-06) delivered over $1.3 million for two important projects in the City of Independence. Rep. Salinas fought for and secured this funding in the government funding package for Fiscal Year 2024, which passed Congress and was signed into law by the President in March.
“For far too long, Oregon’s rural communities have been ignored by our federal government. It’s time we change that, which is why I am so proud to deliver this federal funding for important community projects that will make life better for folks in Independence and Polk County,” said Rep. Salinas. “The funding I secured will be used to help deliver clean, reliable drinking water for residents and build the new Chestnut Street Bridge, which will improve traffic flow and allow for additional economic and housing development in the city. I will keep fighting to ensure communities across Oregon’s Sixth District get the resources needed and deserved from our federal government.”
Rep. Salinas delivered funding for two critical projects in the City of Independence, including $500,000 for the design and construction of a bridge over Ash Creek. This new bridge will connect Chestnut Street and 13th Street, helping relieve traffic bottlenecks and allowing for additional economic and housing development. Additionally, Rep. Salinas delivered $880,000 to replace an aging water line under Corvallis Road, which will help ensure continued access to clean drinking water for residents.
In addition to the funding for these projects, Rep. Salinas delivered over $14 million for community projects across Oregon's Sixth District. These include:
- $500,000 to construct the Dayton Civic Center, a combined City Hall, Library, and Meeting Space that will improve Dayton’s ability to provide services to the community.
- $500,000 to build a community center in Grand Ronde that will provide a gathering place, community services, and improved health care for members of the Grand Ronde Tribe.
- $1,577,079 to construct a highway safety median along the McKay/Yergen/Ehlen Road Safety Corridor in Marion County, a dangerous area that has seen many fatal crashes.
- $1,000,000 to construct two enhanced crossings along Hall Boulevard in Tigard that will help reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities.
- $3,589,200 to design a new roundabout at the intersection of OR-99W and NE McDougall Rd/OR18 in Yamhill County, a high-speed, unsignalized intersection with a significant history of fatal crashes.
- $850,000 to address capacity/security concerns and expand the terminal at the Salem Municipal Airport, including in common areas like baggage claim, passenger queueing areas, and waiting areas.
- $500,000 to replace a pipe in downtown Carlton, allowing the city to reduce wastewater and improve public health and safety.
- $500,000 to construct a new transit center in south Salem, improving mobility and expanding access to public transportation for residents.
- $1,000,000 to expand broadband internet in Sherwood, improving economic development, health care, and education access in the area.
- $850,000 to construct and repair a downtown corridor in McMinnville that intersects with Oregon Highway 99W at two significant intersections.
- $500,000 to make needed repairs and HVAC upgrades to the Tigard Emergency Heating and Cooling Center, which acts as an emergency shelter and provides services for unhoused people during extreme weather.
- $300,000 to pay for a full-time Homeless Community Service Officer in Tigard who will be tasked with monitoring encampments, connecting unhoused individuals with resources, and other important duties.
- $963,000 to make HVAC modernizations and upgrades to congregate care facilities in Washington County, which are vital for ongoing justice and rehabilitation services.
