Salinas’ Bipartisan Bill to Promote AI Education Passes Committee, Moves Step Closer to Becoming Law

Washington, DC Today, U.S. Representative Andrea Salinas (OR-06) announced that her bipartisan bill with Representative Vince Fong (CA-20) passed unanimously out of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. The National Science Foundation Artificial Intelligence Education Act, introduced last month by Reps. Salinas and Fong, would improve Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and education and harness these tools to create more job opportunities for Americans.   

“Artificial intelligence has the potential to drive economic growth and transform our society. We have to harness these tools for good and ensure the American people can benefit from them,” said Rep. Salinas. “I am proud to see my bipartisan bill pass out of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee and move one step closer to becoming law. This legislation will help more college graduates learn about AI and participate in this technological revolution, with a special emphasis on community and technical colleges.”  

TheNSF AI Education Actwould allow the NSF to award AI scholarships for college students, especially when applied to agriculture, education, and advanced manufacturing. Additionally, the bill would establish up to 8 Centers of AI Excellence at community colleges to promote AI education and research. 

The bill now awaits a vote by the full House of Representatives.
