Rep. Salinas’ Statement Opposing Legislation to Shield Big Oil from Climate Accountability
Today, U.S. Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (OR-06) released the following statement opposing legislation that would shield fossil fuel companies from lawsuits seeking to hold them accountable for their role in the climate crisis. The legislation, including H.R. 8330, would restrict the ability of states, local governments, and individuals to pursue climate-related claims against oil and gas companies.
“Oregonians are already paying the price for climate change and this war in Iran. From devastating wildfires to extreme heat and drought, our communities are spending more to recover from disasters and protect their homes and businesses. The last thing we should do is give fossil fuel companies a free pass while taxpayers foot the bill and this war in Iran props up their profits,” said Rep. Salinas. “I strongly oppose any effort to shield fossil fuel companies from accountability for their role in the climate crisis. Oregonians deserve the right to seek justice in court, and I will fight to protect that right.”
The announcement comes as Oregon elected officials and environmental organizations are urging Congress to reject proposals that would grant legal immunity to fossil fuel companies. Rep. Salinas joins their call to preserve the right of communities to seek accountability through the courts.
