Congresswoman Salinas on President Biden's Executive Order to Strengthen Firearm Background Checks
Today, Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (D-Tigard) issued the following statement after President Joe Biden announced an executive order to increase the number of background checks conducted before firearm sales:
“In the average year, more than 580 of our fellow Oregonians are killed by firearms. 580 mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, friends and neighbors stolen from us by often preventable tragedies. It's a cycle as heartbreaking as it is frustrating – because with simple, commonsense safety measures, we can save countless lives.
“Universal background checks would help keep deadly weapons out of dangerous hands. And while the burden to pass such a law falls on Congress, President Biden's executive order is a welcome start. I applaud the president for his initiative on this issue and will continue to work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to stem the rising tide of gun violence.”
