Congresswoman Salinas Denounces H.R. 734

April 20, 2023

Today, Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (D-Ore.) issued the following statement after House Republicans voted to pass H.R. 734:

“H.R. 734 seeks to strip transgender and intersex girls of equal opportunities, further isolating those who disproportionately struggle with mental health challenges, because of how society treats them. This hateful piece of legislation could force every single girl on a sports team to undergo inappropriate body examinations, genital checks, and interrogations about their menstrual cycle – yet another example of the Republican Party’s determination to insert itself into Americans’ private lives.

“There are real, pressing issues facing women’s and girls’ sports, including sexual harassment and assault, lack of equal resources, and gendered pay disparities. And there are certainly many other problems facing our children, from overcrowded classrooms to the looming threat of gun violence. But instead of addressing any of these issues, anti-LGBTQI+ politicians are targeting the handful of trans girls and women who participate in sports, because they think it will distract from the fact that they have no plan for preventing America from falling off a fiscal cliff in just a few weeks. I ran for Congress to fight inflation, expand access to health care and housing, and tackle the climate crisis – not to participate in mean-spirited political theater. H.R. 734 is a bad bill and I was proud to vote ‘no.’”
